French retires from Belfint Lyons & Shuman

Michael French, CPA, former managing director and director of tax & small business, retired on April 30, 2023  after more than  43 years in public accounting and at Belfint, Lyons  and Shuman.

Michael started at BLS in 1980, as the firm’s first ever co-op. He worked his entire public accounting career at BLS and working his way from an entry-level position to Director to Managing Director at the firm, now celebrating its 100th anniversary.

As French  began to contemplate retirement, he passed the baton to the firm’s new Executive Directors on Jan. 1.  

“BLS will miss Michael’s dedication and passion for our firm. He was a mentor and friend to all in the firm’s leadership group. During his tenure he helped build the foundation to assure the BLS will remain a trusted advisor and firm of choice for many businesses, individuals, and organizations within our community,” stated Jonathan Moll, CPA – executive director of Strategy.

Landmark promotions

Landmark Science & Engineering  announced the  promotions of Craig M. Lynch  and Joseph C. Marvasi  to associate. The two professional engineers bring a combined 18-years of relevant experience to the 36-year-old civil engineering, surveying and environmental consulting firm. 

Lynch

Lynch is a Professional Engineer and DNREC Sediment and Stormwater Management Certified Construction Reviewer who has worked as a civil project engineer for Landmark for the past three years. Prior to joining Landmark, Craig was a plan reviewer for New Castle County Department of Land Use where he reviewed 231 Land Development Applications over a five-year period. He has a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (BCE) degree with a concentration in Environmental Engineering from Michigan State University. 

Marvasi

Marvasi, a professional engineer with 10 years of experience performing site/civil and environmental engineering design, has worked for Landmark since joining the firm in 2018. Joe has a Master of Civil Engineering (MCE) degree with a concentration in Environmental Engineering and Water Resources from Norwich University He has  a BCE degree from the University of Delaware. Joe applies civil and water resources engineering and site design to commercial, institutional and residential development projects.

Brady named co-chair of A  Better Delaware

A Better Delaware today announced that Jane Brady has joined the organization. Brady will serve as Co-chair with founder Chris Kenny. Brady previously served  for three terms as Attorney General and served one term as a Delaware Superior Court Judge. She is the former chair of the Delaware Republican Party.

Her grasp of the issues affecting Delaware today is keen and will be a great asset to our advocacy for improving Delaware for the families and businesses here”, said Chris Kenny. Sam Waltz, who currently serves as Vice Chair of A Better Delaware, said, “I have known Jane quite a while and am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her here at A Better Delaware.”

“I am quite familiar with and have admired the significant work that A Better Delaware has done in a very short time. I look forward to working with representatives of Delaware’s business and civic communities to make Delaware a better place to live and do business”, said Brady.  

Brady graduated from the University of Delaware and Villanova University School of Law. She recently received her MBA from the University of Delaware Lerner School. She lives in Lewes with her husband, Michael Neal, and their son, Trent.

Yau joins Beebe

Beebe Healthcare announced the appointment of Cameron Yau, MD, to its medical staff. Dr. Yau is a board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee replacement and revision surgery. He advocates for minimally invasive approaches to joint replacement and is specially trained in anterior approaches to hip replacement. This advanced technique typically allows for a quicker and less painful recovery process for patients. 

Dr. Yau is a member of Beebe’s Medical Staff, performing procedures at Beebe, and practicing independently in the community at Orthopaedic Associates of Southern Delaware, PA. 

Previously, Dr. Yau served as Chief of Surgery at Three Rivers Health in Michigan. Before that, he served at various healthcare institutions in Ontario, Canada

Mitchell Associates  announced the following staff additions.

Cousens

Dalia  Banevicius, graphic designer,  joined Mitchell Associates in August after graduating from Drexel University with a BS in Graphic Design and Fine Arts. While studying at Drexel, Dalia worked  at Macquarie Group as part of the Cooperative Education program. .She is also a freelance graphic designer

Scott, Cousens  architectural designer, is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson University with a BS in Architecture. His architectural interests began at an early age while playing video games. 

John Lawson, architectural designer,  joined Mitchell Associates after graduating from Norwich University with a BS in Architectural Studies. John decided to pursue architecture as a career after winning two state championships in structure and problem solving while in high school

Gabby Schreiber, interior designer,  graduated in 2020 from Moore College of Art & Design with a BFA in Interior Design after receiving her Associate degree from the Delaware College of Art and Design. She has a background in healthcare design.

Delaware Republicans elect Murray party chair

Delaware Republican State Convention elected Julianne Murray, Seaford, as the new State Chair of the DEGOP for the next two years at the state convention.

Delegates also elected Jim Weldin of Newark as Vice Chair, Brandon Brice,, Wilmington, was named party secretary, and Ben Gregg, Hockessin, is the new Treasurer. Murray is a long-time resident of Sussex County and a partner in the law firm Murray, Phillips, and Gay.  In 2022, Murray ran for Attorney General.
