Delaware’s gas price is now well above the national average as the run-up that began over the holidays continues.

Prices rose threee cents a gallon to $3.27 between Sunday and Tuesday. That’s more than 30 cents higher than a week ago, but still nearly 20 cents lower than a month ago, AAA reported.

A driver filling up a large pickup truck, like a Ford F-150, on Tuesday paid $7 more than during the same period a week ago.

Delaware’s gas price is now a few cents a gallon higher than the national figure, despite having one of the lower state fuel tax rates.

On the brighter side, diesel prices continued to drop, but remain well above the price of regular gas.

Membership clubs in northern New Castle County were not as aggressive in raising prices, with the GasBuddy site reporting that BJ’s and Costco clubs posted prices at $2.95 and below. Some independent stations also held down the increases. By contrast, branded stations (ExxonMobil, Shell, etc.) as well as Wawa and Royal Farms were posting $3.30 a gallon prices.

Many states have seen higher gas prices. Crude oil prices have risen above $80 a barrel. However, Delaware prices have been the most volatile, moving well below the national average and then above that figure. Factors affecting price could include crude oil prices and maintenance turnarounds at refineries.

No major refinery breakdowns have been reported.
