The University of Delaware’s Joe Flacco led the Baltimore Ravens to a thrilling 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII played Sunday night in New Orleans.

The victory added to the impressive  accomplishments  of  a list of University of Delaware students, faculty and alumni that includes Nobel Prize winners, Vice President Joe Biden, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Obama campaign mastermind David Plouffe, and McCain presidential campaign chief Steve Schmidt. Another UD quarterback, Rich Gannon, led the Oakland Raiders in a Super Bowl loss.

The Super Bowl victory further  raised the profile of a university that at one time  little known outside the East Coast.

Flacco  – who was joined on the Ravens’ roster this year by fellow Blue Hen Gino Gradkowski, a rookie offensive lineman – was named the game’s most valuable player as he completed 22 of 33 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns.
