The Delaware Congressional Delegation praised a decision to proceed with the expansion of the Port of Wilmington to Edgemoor

Known as Port Delaware, the Edgemoor project, with an estimated final price tag of $636 million, would be financed with a combination of state funding and private investment.

Delaware’s congressional delegation has supported the Port of Wilmington and its plans to include a container port in Edgemoor. In 2022, the delegation helped secure $9.2 million for operations and maintenance work, including a new management plan to support the port’s expansion to the Edgemoor terminal. Last November, the delegation helped in securing a $50 million Port Infrastructure Development Program grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Edgemoor expansion. The grant was made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, championed by the delegation.

“The Port of Wilmington and the Edgemoor terminal expansion will fuel considerable economic growth – and that includes good-paying jobs – for Delaware and our region,” said Sens. Carper, Coons and Congresswoman Blunt Rochester in a joint statement. “We are proud to work with Governor Carney and the Diamond State Port Corporation to deliver the significant federal funds needed for this project, which will remediate a legacy industrial site and enable the electrification of the port to make Edgemoor one of the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly ports in the country.”

Plans have drawn criticism from political leaders along the Delaware River, who claim Delaware received preferential treatment on permits.
