The Middletown Council voted this week to move forward with a floating solar project.
According to the Delaware Municipal Electric Corp.(DEMEC), a three-megawatt solar array would be the first of its kind in Delaware and would float atop one of the town’s wastewater ponds.
DEMEC secured a $125,000 grant from the American Public Power Association for the project.
According to DEMEC, the project will preserve town land for future economic development while dealing with algae growth on the pond. Middletown’s municipal electric utility is a member of DEMEC.
Floating solar has been used at various locations including wastewater ponds.
Sussex County last year sought bids for a floating solar array at a wastewater site near Rehoboth Beach.
