A fire in the Lewes area caused major damage to a tennis and fitness center.
The fire, reported shortly after 9 p.m., occurred in the 18000 block of Plantations Boulevard. The Lewes Fire Department arrived and found smoke and fire coming from Dave Marshall Tennis and Fitness Center. Mutual aid fire companies also assisted.
Delaware State Fire Marshal deputies were called to the scene to perform an investigation.
It was determined that the fire started in the interior of the structure. The cause remains under investigation at this time. The structure was not occupied at the time of the fire. An automatic fire sprinkler system was not in place.
One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. Damage was estimated at $275000.
