Delaware sees snow in large portion of state

State of Delaware offices in Kent and New Castle counties were closed on Friday, January 19. The City of Newark also closed offices, as a powerful storm arrived Friday morning.

The National Weather Service said the strong would be strongest in northern Delaware and southern New Jersey.

Non-essential state employees who live or work in Kent and New Castle Counties must not report to work for this period. Essential state employees designated for severe weather will report as scheduled. Delaware Courts are closed on Friday, except 24-hour Justice of the Peace courts.

On Friday, schools in the affected area moved to remote learning, as did Delaware State University’s Dover campus and the University of Delaware’s Newark campus.

Delaware had not seen snow in nearly two years before the recent series of storms.

The National Weather Service report Forecast snowfall totals have increased slightly across the area.

Snow began between 4 and 7 a.m. Friday and continued into the evening. About an inch and a half of snow had fallen at mid-morning,

The National Weather Service reported that the I-95 corridor and points east to the northern NJ coast had earlier been upgraded to Winter Storm Warnings, with four to six inches in the forecast. Temperatures were just below the freezing mark, conditions that lead to more snow.

Areas along southern New Jersey and southern Delaware may mix with rain at times, which will reduce totals. Very cold and blustery conditions over the weekend may lead to some areas of blowing snow.

Delaware Department of Transportation crews were out on Friday preparing roads with brine in preparation for additional snowfall .
