A recent Public Policy Polling report shows that Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long begins 2024 with a lead in the race for governor.

Although nearly half of voters remain undecided, Hall-Long is up by seven points over New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer.

However, after hearing both candidate profiles, Hall-Long’s lead over Meyer grew to 16 points, with 41% of voters undecided, PPP reported. Meyer has a varied background as a teacher and business owner, among other things. He was largely unknown when he defeated County Executive Tom Gordon. Meyer went on to win a second term. Hall-Long is a nurse educator and served in the State Senate.

The poll was encouraging news for Hall-Long, whose campaign appeared to be losing momentum. The campaign was put on hold after the lieutenant governor ordered an internal audit of the previous campaign finances that her husband had handled.

PPP interviewed 643 likely Democratic primary voters statewide between January 10 and 11. The margin of error is four percent.

“This early poll is a testament to her unwavering commitment and years of dedicated public service to Delaware. As the campaign progresses, we are confident that more voters will recognize Bethany’s unique qualifications and her vision to make Delaware the best place to live, work, and raise a family,”said Hall-Long Campaign Manager Donnie Johnson. “We firmly believe that Bethany is the clear choice to lead Delaware as its next Governor. This campaign represents a historic opportunity as we work towards electing the nation’s first nurse governor, someone who is prepared to lead from day one.”

So far, one Republican candidate has emerged in the governor’s race, with the party believing another candidate will make a bid for the post in a state where Democrats control both houses and all statewide offices
