The City of Wilmington announced that Residential Parking Permits (RPP) for residents who live on the west side of the city have been automatically renewed.

Current permits were scheduled to expire on December 31. With automatic renewal it is not necessary for current westside permit holders to apply for a current permit. The city Finance Department, which manages the permit system, has been experiencing a backlog of renewal applications.

City Finance Director Brett Taylor said it makes more sense to renew the west side permits automatically and eliminate the application backlog. At this time, only residents who have recently moved to a different zone – west side residents who now live on the east side of Wilmington and vice versa – or people who have a new license tag are required to submit an RPP application so that their information can be updated.

The cty will not issue citations for residential parking violations on the west side of the City until Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Westside residents who currently have an RPP will receive an email notice from the city informing them that their permit is valid for two years, through December 31, 2025.

Stickers reminding residents of the next expiration date will also be mailed.  Permits for eastside residents do not expire for another six months, or June 30, 2024.  The automated renewal process will also apply to these RPPs.

The city went on to apologize for any inconvenience caused to any west side resident who had been attempting to submit a renewal application.

The city has been working to improve its parking ticket, towing and enforcement system. This week, the city announced it would replace parking meters with a kiosk system and lower the fine for those paying on time. Motorists had long complained about receiving parking tickets when meters were out of order.
