Vehicle and fleet owners wil see stricter emissions inspection regulations in Delaware beginning Aug. 14.

On January 11, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control revised the Motor Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance regulations in Delaware in an attempt to reduce emissions and improve air quality.

More than one million vehicles are registered in Delaware, with 323,576 vehicles registered in fast-growing Sussex County.

Residents, especially in Sussex County, are asked to give themselves extra time for registration renewal, particularly if they believe the vehicle will need repairs under the new regulations. Motorists can renew their registration up to 90 days before expiration.

Sussex had differing standards due to the county attaining clean air targets. However, rapid population growth is bringing more vehicles to the county.
