The announcement video from the former vice president and long-time U.S. Senator included Delaware scenes, including the Charcoal Pit restaurant, which the future president frequented in his teenage years.

Biden’s campaign headquarters in 2020 was based in Philadelphia, but staff often worked remotely due to Covid-19.

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki praised the decision.

“Joe has remained true to the ideals of leadership, fortitude, and compassion that have always endeared him to the people of our city and our state and now to the nation and the world,” said Purzycki. “We are proud of Joe and proud to host the President and his entire reelection team. We also welcome the media and the world to Wilmington, a city where everyone is respected and appreciated.”

Despite the headquarters being based in Philadelphia, Biden’s focus remained on Delaware, with the celebrations of his nomination and election victory held in Wilmington.

It had long been rumored that Biden would choose the  First State, with Wilmington a short drive from the Philadephia International Airport.

The President and First Lady have traveled to their home near Greenville every other weekend during much of his term. That has trailed off after the launch of the 2024 campaign.

The decision is good news for the Wilmington economy with the campaign temporarily taking space in a city with a 30% office vacancy rate and media and others booking  hotel rooms.
