Food & Drink: Cheddar’s appears to be headed to northern Delaware; Capriotti’s debuts in Manhattan; Jersey Mike’s location opens

The Cheddar’s chain is apparently coming to Center Pointe Plaza, part of a large strip center near ChristianaCare’s Newark campus and various corporate sitss in the Stanton-Christiana area south of Newark.

The location is apparently the long-vacant former Old Country Buffet site, based on marketing materials from a leasing agent for the center.

Officials of Cheddar’s have not responded to a request for comments ever since the site was rumored to be a location.

Cheddar’s has 175 locations and is part of restaurant giant Darden, whose portfolio includes Olive Garden, Bahama Breeze, and the Longhorn steakhouse chains.

About eight years ago, it unloaded the Red Lobster chain as it struggled with promotions, seafood prices and other issues. A seafood supplier now owns the company.

Cheddar’s says it offers a menu of made-for-scratch items at modest prices.

Cheddar’s has operated a location near Dover since 2013 and has generally received good marks from diners.

Capriotti’s opens in Big Apple

Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, is now in the Big Apple.

The location in  Manhattan is at 300 E 61st Street.

The new shop will also provide over 20 new jobs to the Manhattan community.

Capriotti’s for its sandwiches, including ‘The Bobbie,’ made with oven-roasted turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and mayo; ‘The Capastrami,’ made with hot pastrami, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing and homemade coleslaw; and cheese steak varieties made with premium steak, chicken or Impossible plant-based meat with melted cheese and peppers.

The location is owned by Ashok Israni, who said he tried Capriotti’s for the first time and decided to purchase a franchise.

Capriotti’s was founded in Wilmington and earlier in its existence expanded to Las Vegas, where it now has a large cluster of stores. The company is based in Las Vegas.

Capriotti’s expansion on the East Coast has been slow, with a location in Washington, DC, closing a few years ago and the company never entered the cheesesteak and hoagie mecca of Philadelphia. It recently announced plans to expand into Philadelphia with the Capriotti and Wing Zone locations.

Capriotti’s earlier acquired the Wing Zone brand, which now has about 30 locations. None are in Delaware. There are about 175 Capriotti’s locations.

Jersey Mike’s adds Newark location

 Jersey Mike’s Subs opened at the Grove, the former College Square Shopping Center in Newark.

The franchise owner is Jennifer Clarke.

“We’re excited to have the opportunity to continue serving the Newark community,” said Clarke. “We are looking forward to sharing Jersey Mike’s experience at The Grove.  We hope to be excellent community partners with the Newark residents and businesses for many years to come.”

Jersey Mike’s Subs, with more than 2,200 locations nationwide.

Earllier, High 5 Hospitality acquired five Delaware Jersey Mike’s locations, including one on College Avenue on the south end of Newark. High 5 also owns Buffalo Wild Wings locations in Delaware and Maryland, along with other restaurants.
