In its weekly Covid-19  report, The Delaware Division of Public Health took note of the increased presence of the Delta variant and a growing number of hospitalizations.

The seven-day average for the percentage of total tests that came in positive was 4.6%, an increase from 3.6% on Tuesday, July 27.

The positive test rate had been as low as 1% earlier in the summer. A rate above 5 percent is considered to be a sign of significant spread. A year ago, Delaware was struggling to stay below the 5% mark.

Also, 71 individuals are hospitalized due to COVID-19 in Delaware, an increase of 39 from last week and well above the low of fewer than 20.

Eight of the hospitalized persons are critically ill, an increase of five from last week.

No deaths were reported in the last week. Most older Delawareans who are more vulnerable to dying from the virus have been vaccinated. Still, younger people can end up with serious cases.

Vaccinations

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 73.2% of Delawareans ages 18+ have received at least one dose of the vaccine.  The rate would be higher if more younger adults received vaccines.

A  total of 1,067,747 administered doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been reported to the state’s immunization information system, DelVAX. Among Delawareans 12-plus, 534,132 have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with  474,050 Delawareans now fully vaccinated. Delaware has a total population of just under one million.

Delaware’s latest COVID-19 vaccination statistics can be found under the Vaccine Tracker dashboard at de.gov/healthycommunity

As of Friday, August 6, the Division of Public Health has identified the following Covid-19 variants in Delaware through routine surveillance of test specimens. T

The variants are based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list of Variants of Concern and Variants of Interest. Forty-one percent of the test results sequenced over the last week were positive for a variant strain of COVID-19.

Breakthrough Cases

To date, 474,050 Delawareans have been fully vaccinated. There have been 718 breakthrough cases of Covid-19, occurring in approximately 0.1 percent of vaccinated individuals.

A breakthrough case is defined as testing positive for Covid-19 after an individual has been fully vaccinated for two weeks or more – although it does not mean that the infection actually occurred after vaccination.  Twenty-eight of the reported breakthrough cases involved hospitalizations, and nine individuals passed away, although it does not mean Covid was the cause of death.
