The Newark City Council Monday night approved construction of a five-story building with apartments and commercial space at the site of the Super 8 Motel on East Main Street.
Despite controversies over building heights, the project had little opposition. The aging motel with outside entrances has seen its share of crime-related issues over the years.
Plans call for demolition of the motel with commercial apace and parking on the first floor and 56 two-bedroom apartments on the upper floors of 268 East Main St., next door to the Grain Restaurant.
The motel area had received previous approvals for a special use permit and subdivision plans.
Developer is the Pelsa Company.
The motel started out as a TravelLodge and was later converted to budget brand.
Work is now underway on a higher higher-end hotel to the west of the Super 8.
