Delaware remained in the “critical” category for new Covid cases, with nearly 550 new cases and more than 200 hospitalizations.

All signs point to the faster spreading  Covid-19 Delta variant leading to a surge in cases and hospitalizations.

The critical designation came  from Covid ActNow.

Earlier  Delaware sometimes had gone a week or more without a Covid-19-related death earlier in the summer,  the state Division of Public Health reported three new fatalities from the virus on Thursday.

Of the deaths reported, two were residents of New Castle County and one from Sussex County, who ranged in age from their 50s to their 80s. None was a resident of a long-term care facility. Two individuals were not vaccinated; one was fully vaccinated. The deaths increased Delaware’s total number of Covid-related deaths to 1,875.

The other numbers

  • 547 new positive cases, bringing the overall total to 118,544.
  • 7.5% of total tests were positive in the seven-day rolling average, up three-tenths of a percent  from the previous day).
  • 210 current hospitalizations, up nine from the previous day,  including 34 individuals in critical condition.
  • 13 new hospital admissions, down 4 from the previous day).
  • 492,758 Delawareans fully vaccinated, up 1,412 from the previous day).
  • 1,109,421 total vaccine doses were administered, up 2,723 from the previous day).

Below is the  Delaware widget from Covid Act Now that shows the state continues to rank in the very high-risk category,  primarily due to the increase in new cases. Neighboring states are “high risk,” the next category down.

Covid ActNow notes that the fully vaccinated are at a much lower risk of getting the virus. Delaware ranks in the upper tier among the 50 states in the percentage of its fully vaccinated population.

The percentage of breakthrough cases (the fully vaccinated getting Covid-19) has doubled recently but remains below three-tenths of one percent among the fully inoculated.

Vaccination rates remain low in Kent County and among younger adults.
