President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden traveled from Joint Base Andrews to Dover this morning as fallen service members arrived at the Air Force Base.

The Bidens were part of the dignified transfer of remains of the 11 Marines, a Navy Corpsman and an Army soldier killed when a suicide bomber ignited explosives outside the airport in Kabul.

The President later approved drone strikes in another part of Afghanistan that reportedly killed planners who may have been tied to the bombings.

The Associated Press reported today that a strike demolished a vehicle believed to be carrying a suicide bomber. Secondary explosions were reported, a possible indication that explosives were being carried.

The Bidens met with families of the service members, according to the White House schedule.  All recent presidents have traveled to Dover to attend the solemn ceremony.

Dover Air Force Base is the site of the nation’s military mortuary that typically administers to the remains of service members who died overseas.

The Bidens will return to the White House this afternoon. The president will receive briefings on the situation in Afghanistan and Hurricane Ida, which is heading to New Orleans with winds of 150 miles an hour.

All flights in and out of New Orleans have been canceled as thousands fled the city and other areas of Louisiana.

The administration has warned of further attacks on people and the military personnel working on flights out of the country.

The Bidens delayed a  summer vacation that seemed likely to take place in  Delaware as the Afghan government fell and conditions became dire for those stranded in the nation.

The airlift is slated to come to an end at the end of August. Aircraft from Dover has been part of the airlift that included more than 600 leaving via C-17 transport.
