A Maryland roadbuilder was the low bidder on a $10 million contract aimed at reducing congestion on Route 1 south of Christiana Mall.

The bid from Allen Myers MD. Inc, Fallston came in at nearly $10 million, about $100,000 above the engineer’s estimate. The project is expected to get underway in spring 2020.

The construction time is about 200 calendar days, according to Delaware Department of Transportation spokesman C.R. McLeod. Completion will come in late 2020 or early 2021.

The project would add an auxiliary lane along southbound Route 1 at the off-ramp at Route 273 to the Route 40 exit.

Currently, thru traffic in the right lane has to change lanes from the exit-only lane. That contributes to occasional back-ups and can be a factor in accidents.

The project will widen the existing shoulder and relocate lighting and signs.
