AAA Mid-Atlantic supports stepped up enforcement of distracted driving

Wilmington-based AAA Mid-Atlantic has come out in favor of stepped up efforts to crack down on distracted driving.

Earlier this week, Delaware State Police ticketed 49 drivers in a four-hour operation along Concord Pike north of Wilmington. The operation included the use of nontraditional vehicles staffed with troopers who observed texting and related violations.

Other troopers ticketed the vehicles.

“Crash statistics and polling by AAA both show that distracted driving is dangerous and is recognized by most drivers as a threat to their safety, unfortunately AAA surveys and studies consistently show that we have a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ culture,” said AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman Ken Grant.  “AAA supports both education and enforcement to help curb the dangerous practice of distracted driving and we support the enhanced enforcement provided by Delaware State Police and the Delaware Office of Highway Safety.”

Grant  said motorists can “expect to hear more from us on distracted driving this year – we really need to change driver behavior to make our roads safer.”
