Man critically injured in accident at Delmar dragstrip

The Delaware State Police are investigating what was described as an industrial accident at US 13 Dragway near the Maryland border. 

On Saturday afternoon troopers were dispatched to  37735 Raceway Road Delmar.

The investigation revealed the driver, a 34-year-old from Pocomoke, MD, was driving a 1995 Ford Mustang was making a timed run.

The track was closed to the public for a private event.  During the run,  troopers said the vehicle was entered the eighth-mile mark at a high rate of speed. He lost control of his vehicle and struck a guardrail. The vehicle then struck the finish line post and went into a barrel roll coming to rest on its roof. The driver was wearing a helmet and had restraints.

Troopers said the driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown by the Delaware State Aviation Unit to the Christiana Hospital. The Delaware State Police is continuing to investigate the mishap.

The US 13 Dragway is part of a racing complex that includes Delaware International Speedway, a dirt track.
