OurBus, a  company specializing in crowdsourced intercity and commuter bus routes, is starting service from Newark to New York City.

The company is adding service from college towns like Newark.

Newark service will depart from the Route 896 & Route 4 Park and Ride, Friday through Sunday, effective August 31.  Promotional fares start at $25 each way. Tickets can be purchased  here.  Passengers are dropped off in Midtown Manhattan.

“Our top priority is expanding to towns like Newark, Delaware, that have been historically underserved by existing transportation options,” said Axel Hellman, co-founder, OurBus. “We offer an inexpensive and efficient way to travel to New York City, and based on customer demand, we’ll expand our schedule to further meet the needs of the local university population.”

Newark is also served by Megabus, which offers service to New York City and Baltimore.

OurBus recently launched service in State College, PA and is expanding to more than two dozen college towns including Newark.

OurBus will offer complimentary bus rides to prospective students visiting select colleges starting this fall as part of the company’s college town expansion. OurBus is piloting additional luggage service for students going back-to-school, beginning in  Ithaca this August.

The company is developing bus routes in partnership with current and future customers, via crowdsourcing and offering pop-up bus routes. For example, the company is piloting service from Bethesda and Rockville,  MD.  to New York City over Labor Day weekend.   To suggest new routes, visit www.ourbus.com

By using crowdsourcing to bring efficient bus service to leisure travelers, students, and families on a budget,  OurBus – founded in 2016 – is bucking the traditional bus service model, which utilizes a point to point network concept.

The company is now offering the OurBus Select Membership program, targeting students, frequent travelers, and families on a budget.  Members will receive discounts.

Buses are equipped with free wi-fi, individual charging ports,  bottled water, and bathrooms.

The company’s app is available from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Newark is also served by MegaBus, which offers service to New York City and Baltimore. Greyhound service operates out of Wilmington.
