Newark Police report drop in serious crimes during 2017

Newark Police reported a sharp decrease in crime in 2017.

Comparing the time period of January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2016, to the same time period in 2017, robberies decreased by 24.4 percent, burglaries decreased by 37.2 percent, and thefts fell by 17.7 percent. 

In analyzing the 10-year crime trend between 2007 and 2017, robberies fell by 43.7 percent, burglaries dropped by 74.3 percent, and thefts were down by 40.8 percent.

“Due to the tireless efforts of our officers and the community, the City of Newark has once again experienced a decline in violent crime.  The Newark Police Department will continue to foster our close relationship with the residents of the City to combat all crime and we anticipate this relationship will continue to lower violent crime in the future,” said Newark Police Chief Paul Tiernan.
