The Delaware KIDS Fund and Harvey, Hanna & Associates, Inc. stopped by the Cape Henlopen Food Basket in Sussex Clounty making a donation to help continue the fight against hunger.

Walk with Me a success

The  Easter Seals second annual Walk With Me Delmarva event has raised  more than $25,000 to date.

More than 290 people participated in the walk which featured local families served by Easter Seals.

“Easter Seals is overwhelmed by the incredible support of the local community for our second Walk With Me Delmarva event,” Ken Sklenar, president/CEO of Easter Seals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore, said. “I would like to thank the community for their hard work and dedication to supporting people with disabilities. We are very hopeful we will meet our $30,000 goal with the help of our local community.”

The Food Bank of Delaware announced significant donations from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation. Over the past two years, the Food Bank of  Delaware has received two refrigerated trucks and more than $330,000 from the Walmart Foundation, and close to one million pounds of food from the retailer.

The Food Bank of Delaware received its first truck from the Walmart Foundation in 2012.

Earlier this fall, the food bank received its second truck valued at $117,000. The two 26-foot trucks enable the hunger-relief organization to travel up and down the state picking up perishable food donations, including fruits, vegetables and meats, from local retailers – including Walmart.

According to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap study, 119,500 Delawareans live in food insecure households.

Sunday Breakfast Mission  sees more people in need

The Sunday Breakfast Mission in Wilmington is reporting an increase in those seeking lodging in 2014.

The organziation is reporting it is averaging 240 people a night, up for 197 in 2013. In addition, the community meal for non-residents is up more than 25 percent, with children accounting for a substantial part of the increase.

Rev. Tom Laymon, CEO of the Breakfast Mission says the organization launched a major food drive, but reported that results have been slow. “We need a real push over the next few weeks to keep in a strong position of serving the people coming to us for help,” Laymon stated.

The organization still has a need for frozen turkeys and fresh meats. Business can drop off products at the mission at 110 N. Poplar St. Laymon can be reached at 302-293-7767.
