Spokesperson Rebecca Passo Mikulski confirmed hiring is taking place for 500 full-time positions.

She said growing demand is the reason for the hiring and not seasonal positions. The News Journal reported the added positions will boost employment at the Middletown site to 2,000.

Passo Mikulski noted that the positions offer benefits from the first day of employment.

“We are seeking bright, motivated, hardworking individuals to fill fulfillment associate positions and the ideal candidate possesses a strong work ethic, attention to detail, the ability to meet deadlines, and a commitment to customer service as it relates to product fulfillment,” Passo Mikulski stated in an email message.

She said Amazon.com offers full-time employees innovative programs like Career Choice. In that program, the company will pre-pay up to 95 percent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon. Rebecca Passo Mikulski.

Amazon opened the fulfillment  center with incentives from the state and the Town of Middletown in 2012.

Delaware was able to attract the first East Coast distribution center for Amazon, but until 2012 was unable to tap into the rapid expansion of the Internet retailer.

The hiring is good news when it comes efforts to add jobs in Delaware that do not require advanced degrees.

Speculation has swirled around plans by Amazon.com, including the possibility of same-day shipping and further expansion into the grocery business.

Amazon has also taken heat from some shareholders for expanding too fast and not focusing enough on quarterly earnings results, with small retailers complaining that the company has an unfair advantage when it receives government incentives.

In the meantime, Amazon.com has settled up with a number of states on charging sales taxes for Internet orders as it opens centers throughout the nation and seeks a bigger share of the retail market.
