House Industries earlier this month opened a gallery and store at 1151 Yoklyn Road in the mill town of Yorklyn near Hockessin on the northern edge of the state. The store features clothing and household objects that have come out of the House design esthetic.
House Industries was founded in 1993 in Delaware as a type foundry. It has gained international recognition for its typefaces that reflect popular culture and various eras including the “Rat Pack” days of Las Vegas and the California drag racing-inspired work of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth.
House also works with well known type designers, one example, being Ed Benguiat.
In the type business, the company deals with the realities of the digital age. According to its website, House estimates that half of its fonts are used without licensing. The company does offer an iPhone App, with users able to edit and share images using its fonts.
Hours of the store are noon to five p.m., Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and by appointment. The store will be closed from Dec. 24 through Jan. 1.
