First it was a national monument. Then it was an airline. Now, it appears Delaware may no longer have the dubious distinction of being a state without a professional non-baseball  sports team.

An announcement on Saturday afternoon is scheduled in Newark. In attendance will be Gov. Jack Markell, U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, the president of the National Basketball Association’s Development League and the lead owner of the Philadelphia 76ers.

No details were disclosed, but it appears a team will make its home in Newark, given the location of the announcement.

The league consists of about 15 teams in smaller markets around the nation.

The league grew after the collapse of the Continental Basketball Association, the successor of the Eastern Basketball Association that had operated since the 1940s.
