Bethany Beach officer charged with assault of suspect

An  investigation conducted by the Special Investigations Unit of the Delaware Attorney General’s Office led to the arrest of a Bethany Beach police officer.

The investigation was initiated after a March incident involving the officer and a suspect in custody was referred to the Attorney General’s Office by the Town of Bethany Beach. Richard Haden, age 45, a Bethany Beach Police Lieutenant, is accused of assaulting a suspect who was in custody at the department headquarters on the evening of March 3. The Town cooperated fully in the Attorney General’s investigation.

The Attorney General’s Office secured an indictment Monday, April 22nd from the Sussex County Grand Jury charging Haden with one count of Assault 3rd Degree. Haden turned himself in to Capital Police in Georgetown on April 22. After being arraigned he was released on $500 unsecured bond. The next proceeding is a case review scheduled for May 20.
