2013 Firefly Music fest expected to boost central Delaware economy


fireflyvideoThe Firefly Music Festival has rolled out a starting line-up with something for fans of all ages.

The event should also aid a central Delaware economy that has seen declining attendance at the two NASCAR weekends.

A report from WDDE reported economic impact estimates of between $12 million and $30 million.

That’s a fraction of the more than $100 million in impact from the NASCAR weekends, but with a full year of preparation this time around, the event may be able to add to attendance figures and provide a bigger boost to the economy.


The event in Dover came out of nowhere last year to become a top music festival on the East Coast. It also gained attention in music magazines such as Billboard and Rolling Stone.

Two long-term survivors in rock, the Red Hot Chile Peppers and Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker get top billing, at least for now. Rap pioneers Public Enemy are also coming to the event, along with dozens of other bands and performers.

A sampling of others (a number of whom have appeared on the music segment in Saturday Night Live include: Foster the People, Lumineers, Alabama Shakes, Passion Pit and Kendrick Lamar.

Other bands are likely to be signed as the event approaches.

The festival will be held Jan. 21 to 23 in a wooded  area near Dover International Speedway.

The festival last year featured upscale food, craft beer and even balloon rides. According to a release from Dover International Speedway,  “…The Arcade, the Hammock Hangout, the Dogfish Head Brewery featuring Firefly Ale, The Vineyard wine garden, and a number of enhanced culinary options will return, with a host of new attractions and amenities are being added this year.

“After a highly successful inaugural event, we are excited to welcome Red Frog Events’ Firefly Music Festival back to the Woodlands at Dover International Speedway,” said Michael Tatoian, COO of Dover Motorsports, Inc. “After watching last year’s event blossom into a premier music festival, we’re excited to again partner with Red Frog in expanding on the success of year one and making the second annual event even better.”

Tickets go on sale on Thur. Feb. 21.
