The City of Newark avoided major damage related to Hurricane Sandy. With minimal power outages and road flooding, the city decided to close its emergency operations center at 9 a.m Monday Crews will continue to assess any damage throughout the day. Wilmington’s emergency center remains in operation and the evacuation of a small section of the city remains in effect.
City officials thanked residents for remaining in doors and off the roads during the storm. With Governor Markell instituting a level one driving restriction, residents are discouraged from driving unless there is a significant safety, health, or business reason to do so. Should driving be necessary, use caution while traveling on roadways as there may be downed tree limbs or other hazards. Water and leaves may create slippery road conditions, according to a city release.
Rainfall in Newark was estimated at around 4 inches and neighboring areas of Pennsylvania did not see downpowers that according to some estimates could have totaled 10 inches.
