The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control reported the release of 350 pounds of sulfer dioxide from the Delaware City Refinery at 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The refinery is owned by PBF Energy.
DNREC reported the flaring incident at the refinery was quickly controlled. Flaring takes place to relieve pressure on when compressor trips or other incidents take place. Published reports indicated the refinery remained in operation as the remnants of Hurricane Sandy went through the area.
The chemical or substance is considered to be hazardous by the EPA and the incident remains under investigation.
