Troopers are investigating a crash that occurred on Interstate 95 near Newark that snarled traffic and left one person in critical condition.
Delaware State Police reported that at 3:33 p.m. on Wednesday a 2007 Honda Civic operated by Margery Szczepanski, 58, of New York, N.Y., was traveling on I-95 southbound, north or State Route 896, in the center lane. The Civic moved into the right lane, striking the rear of a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. The impact caused the Jeep to travel eastward, across all of the travel lanes and the median, and onto northbound I-95, where it truck a 2012 Subaru Legacy that was traveling north.
The driver of the Subaru was transported by ambulance to Christina Hospital Trauma Center and admitted in stable condition. The driver of the Jeep was transported by ambulance to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center and admitted in critical condition. Szczepanski and the passenger in the Civic were not injured. The victims were not identified, pending notification of next of kin.
I-95 southbound was shut down for approximately one half hour, and I-95 northbound shut down for approximately three and one half hours, while Troopers investigated and cleared the scene. This crash remains under investigation.
