Art Modell, whose 43-year NFL career made him a regular finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, died today of natural causes at Johns Hopkins Hospital at the age of 87
He owned the Cleveland Browns and later moved the franchise to Baltimore before eventually selling the team. He went on to become a popular figure in Baltimore, which had been without a team when Colts moved the franchise during a snowstorm.
Modell became a popular figure in Baltimore. Meanwhile, in Cleveland, the Lerner family used a fortune built on investments in Wilmington-based MBNA and other companies to buy a franchise that retained the Cleveland Browns name. MBNA was later sold to Bank of America.
