The Bloom Energy fuel cell system will begin operating in August and will reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent, increase energy reliability while also delivering cost savings, according to the biotechnology company.

The fuel system will generate enough electricity to power more than 1,000 homes.

Bloom plans to build a fuel cell manufacturing plant in Newark, Delaware as well as build fuel cell farms to feed power into the grid in Delaware. Delmarva Power customers would pay a surcharge to make up for the higher cost of the fuel cells that are powered by natural gas.

Lawsuits filed by a critic of Bloom aim to stop the project and claim favoritism by the State of Delaware and environmental problems among other things.
