Clean-up work on a Delaware City Superfund site will lead to some temporary odors.

Beginning on  Monday,  the US Environmental Protection Agency in cooperation with DNREC will do work at the Standard Chlorine of Delaware / Metachem EPA Superfund Site north of Delaware City that could allow nuisance odors in the area.

Workers will consolidate contaminated soil from the site in a single area that will be capped as part of ongoing remedial action at the site.

DNREC’s Office of Community Services advised   that the soil consolidation work may cause “mothball-type” odors that could cross the site boundary.

DNREC and EPA also advise that monitoring for dust and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) will be in place along the perimeter of the site to ensure that, while there may be nuisance odors, there will be no danger  to the public from the odors.

The work will take place  between 7 a.m. and end by around  3:30 p.m.

The EPA t0ok over the clean-up of the site after the bankruptcy of Metachem in the early 2000s. Work has included incineration of chemicals, demolition of the plant  and dealing with contaminated soil and water supplies.
