The Post House is closing all three of its locations in northern Delaware. The sites had been for sale for a number of months.

The last day is June 17 for the Main Street store in Newark that served breakfast and lunch to generations of residents and students, according to a Facebook posting from the Downtown Newark Partnership.

It remains a reminder of the architectural history of Main Street with a 1950s appearance  that blends in with structures from other eras.

Jane Wolsey managed the Newark  location for 46 years and is one of a handful of people who has worked on Main Street for more than four decades. During that time she aided many a college student encouraging them while their parents were hundreds of miles away.

She also made sure the diner was open for City of Newark, Delaware work crews and the Police Department during heavy storms so they could have a hot cup of coffee and warm meal.

If history is any guide the site of the restaurant will not be vacant for long, although it could end up as another new mixed use development on Main Street.  The unique exterior of another former diner on Main Street was preserved  as part of a mixed use project that now is the home of Cheeburger Cheeburger.

Indeed, NewarkPostOnline.com reported that a restaurant specializing in grilled cheese sandwiches will take the Place of the Post House.

In the Facebook posting announcing the milestone, the Downtown Newark Partnership asked residents to stop by and say hello as the Newark institution ends its long stay on Main Street. – Doug Rainey
