On Monday, Delaware Gov. John Carney formally announced his candidacy for Wilmington mayor.

Carney is in the last year of his final term as governor. In Delaware, governors are limited to two consecutive terms.

Carney has made no secret of his plans to run for governor after current Mayor Mike Purzycki announced he would not seek a third term.

Carney will face off in the Democratic primary against Wilmington City Treasurer Velda Jones-Potter. Jones-Potter served for a short period as Delaware State Treasurer. Potter and Purzycki have clashed over issues related to the duties of the city treasurer’s office.

Jones-Potter earlier launched a bid for mayor and rolled out a website.

During his two terms as governor, Carney has focused on public education in the city and was also involved in the the aftermath of a decision by DART to bus routes away from a hub at Rodney Square. The move was unpopular with some riders and other critics who claimed corporate pressures led to the decision.
