Delaware January jobless rate remains steady at 4.1%

Delaware’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in January 2024 was 4.1%, unchanged from December 2023.

Delaware’s jobless rate remains above the national figure, although the gap has narrowed over the past year.

The Delaware Department of Labor reported 20,700 unemployed Delawareans in January compared to 20,300 in January 2023.

The nation’s unemployment rate was 3.7% in January 2024, unchanged from December 2023. In January 2023, the US unemployment rate was 3.4%, while Delaware’s rate was 4.1%. 

In January 2024, seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment was 486,700, up from 486,200 in December 2023. Since January 2023, Delaware’s total nonfarm jobs have increased by 5,300, up 1.1%. Nationally, jobs during that period increased by 1.9%.

Gains came in the healthcare-private education sector. However, staff reductions were reported in the professional and business categories in waste management, employment services, administrative services.

Construction and finance managed to eke out small gains, despite high interest rates. Retail employment was largely unchanged and growth in leisure and hospitality, moderated after the sector being the source of many previous job gains following the Covid pandemic
