Wawa announces aggressive expansion into North Carolina

Wawa wants to bridge the gap in stores along the Eastern Seaboard.

The convenience store/gas station chain announced an expansion into North Carolina, with eight stores opening next year.

Wawa’s initial phase of expansion into North Carolina includes plans to open approximately 80 stores across the eastern region of the state over the next 10-plus years.

In addition to the stores set to open in 2024, Wawa has more than 30 sites under contract currently going through local approval processes. Wawa expects to open up to 15 stores in 2025 and 10 stores in 2026.

Wawa announced the North Carolina expansion at two events.

Wawa has been holding events announcing expansions into Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Alabama and Georgia.

Rivals Sheetz and Royal Farms are also expanding into nearby states with stores that offer fuel and a growing food menu.

Wawa has expanded rapidly in Florida and now has hundreds of stores. Its total store count is now 1,000. The company is headquartered in Delaware County, PA.
