County Police issue advisory on South American burglary gangs

114

New Castle County Police are advising residents of a surge in burglaries from roving gangs of South American “criminal tourists.”

The gang members, often from Chile and Columbia, often target homes owned by Asian Americans. The gangs are often unrelated but use similar methods.

The groups are known to steal jewelry, watches, designer merchandise, cash, and gold bars. They use radios, disguises, lookouts, and surveillance to check out potential homes in neighborhoods.

The gangs works rapidly to complete their burglaries and typically ship the items they steal back to their home countries or attempt to sell the items prior to leaving.

The lengthy post noted that several arrests have been made. (See photos).

It also suggested ways to fight back, including authorizing the use of license plate readers at the entrances to developments.
