Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to tax and gun charges stemming from a federal investigation.

According to the court document, the president’s son agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges for willfully not filing income taxes for two years and possessing a gun while being a drug user. Biden agreed to enter a pre-trial diversion agreement for the firearm charge.

According to the Delaware U.S. Attorney’s Office, from Oct. 12, 2018, through Oct. 23, 2018, Hunter Biden possessed a firearm despite knowing he was an unlawful user of a controlled substance. Hunter Biden’s long-running history of drug use has been widely reported.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of a year in prison on each tax charge and a maximum penalty of 10 years on the firearm charge.  Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties, the U.S. Attorney’s office noted. Penalties often include serving no prison time on both the tax and gun diversion programs

After considering sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors, a federal district court judge will determine any sentence.

Other allegations were not mentioned in the one-page filing, including profiting from family connections and the contents on his laptop computer after the machine was reportedly dropped off at a Trolley Square Wilmington Apple repair shop, with the owner later holding a press conference. The repair shop later went out of business.

Former New York City Mayor Ruby Guiliani and or/associates were reported to have dropped off the laptop’s contents to Delaware police. Guiliani reportedly offered the contents to major media outlets in the lead-up to the election, with the New York Post apparently the only outlet taking up his offer The Post has continued to focus on laptop and other issues related to Hunter Biden.

The controversy leading up to Biden’s victory over Trump is the subject of a lengthy Wikipedia Post.

A Congressional investigation, led by House Republicans, is ongoing and a plea deal that may lead to no prison time is expected to draw criticism.

U.S. Attorney David Weiss also said the Biden investigation is ongoing. Weiss, a Trump appointee, has been supervising the investigation. He remained in his post due to the Biden case.

U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, who has close ties with the president, issued the following statement:

“A five-year-long thorough investigation by a Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney has reportedly concluded with Hunter Biden pleading guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and entering pretrial diversion on a gun-related charge. From press accounts, I am encouraged that Hunter is taking responsibility for his actions, paying the taxes that he owes, and preparing to move on with his life.”
