Two  Delaware State University students were injured in an on-campus  shooting  early Saturday morning in Dover.

The students were taken to a hospital for  further treatment. University police and local law enforcement are investigating.  No details on the condition of the students were releassed.

University President Dr. Tony Allen issued the following:

“First, let me say that my thoughts this morning are with the students and families as well as any other members of our university community affected by this moment.

At Delaware State University, we are a family. An event that affects the safety of one of us affects all of us. When moments like these emerge, they are understandably fraught with anxiety and indignation. I share your feelings, and, at the same time, I can assure students and families that the university is committed to creating and maintaining a safe campus environment.

We will pursue justice in this matter. Our commitment to ourselves and each other leads us to respond to any challenge made against our collective and individual senses of security.”

According to Allen, on Tuesday, September 6, DSU  will hold a forum to provide updates.

The football home opener against Lincoln University went on as scheduled.

“Cheer on our student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Let’s honor their hard work, effort, and excellence. For the safety of the entire University community, you will notice additional security at all home games,” Allen stated.

The following is an excerpt from a statement issued by University of Delaware President Dennis Assanis.

“We are truly saddened to hear this terrible news. Based on information available at this time, there does not appear to be any threat to the University of Delaware campus communities in Dover, Newark, or other locations in the state.

Our hearts go out to the students, faculty, staff, families, and everyone within and beyond the DSU community affected by this incident. The horror surrounding such a violent act is shocking to everyone, and we will continue to keep the DSU Hornet family in our thoughts as they cope with the full impact of this tragedy in the days ahead.

All universities share a critical mission to build a better, more peaceful world through education, compassion, and service to others. As a connected community, we must never waiver from that commitment.”
