Those stretching out their Labor Day holiday may see delays on the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

Work to prepare for phase one of a major construction project to rehabilitate the bridge deck (driving surface) of the New Jersey bound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge (DMB) will begin on September 5 . Once the initial setup of lane closures is complete, two right lanes of the northbound span will be continuously closed until just before the Thanksgiving holiday period.

Beginning on the night  of Sept. fifth  and continuing through Sept. ninth, construction crews will establish the bypass lane on the Delaware-bound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.  The two left lanes heading to Delaware will be closed at night from 9  p.m. to 6 a.m.; with a third lane closed from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.  Once the bypass lane is created on the Delaware-bound span, work will shift to the New Jersey-bound span.

Motorists may encounter delays, particularly during rush hour time periods and peak weekend travel times.

With one span more than seven decades old and handling record traffic,  the bridge is in need of continuous maintenance that includes major projects.
