The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating a Thursday night fire that heavily damaged a New Castle area flooring business and caused $1 million in damage.

The fire was reported shortly before 10:30 pm at  J and M Commercial Park in the 100 block of J and M Drive near Churchmans Road, New Castle. The Christiana Fire Company arrived on the scene and found smoke coming from the building.  Several fire companies responded to the stubborn blaze.

Christiana Fire Co reported that firefighters found billowing smoke coming from the building.

The fire proved to be difficult to extinguish, with the flooring business having adhesive chemicals and other solvents. That led to the county hazardous materials response assisting in decontaminating fire crews operating in and around the building. No injuries were reported.

The name of the business was not immediately available. J&M Drive is home to several businesses.

The state Fire Marshal’s office determined that the fire was accidental and resulted from a  malfunction in the heating process for epoxy resin inside the warehouse.
