Delaware job recovery mirrors neighbors, lags national rate

The Delaware Department of Labor reported that Delaware has gained 9,100 jobs from March 2021 to the same month this year, a gain of 2% during the year.

The job gain is weaker than the national number, and the state’s unemployment rate remains higher than the national average.  Neighboring Maryland and Pennsylvania have also seen higher jobless rates.

The leisure and hospitality industry added 3,400 jobs during the one year. Wholesale and retail trade and professional and business services also grew by 2,300 and 1,200 jobs, respectively. Education  & health services jobs were the only category to see fewer jobs year over year, with employment  down by 1,900 over-the-year

Delaware’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in March 2022 was 4.5%, down from 4.6% in February 2022. 

The labor department reported  22,600 unemployed Delawareans in March compared to 28,500 in March 2021.

The nation’s unemployment rate was 3.6% in March 2022, down from 3.8% in February 2022. In March 2021, the US unemployment rate was 6  percent, while Delaware’s rate was 5.8%.

In March 2022, seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment was 456,900, up from 455,500 in February 2022. Since March 2021, Delaware’s total nonfarm jobs have increased by 9,100, increasing 2.1%. Nationally, job growth during that period increased 4.6%.
