Interstate 495 northbound was closed Tuesday morning due to a crash involving a tractor-trailer near the 12th Street bridge in Wilmington.

The Delaware Department of Transportation later reported that two left lanes were open to traffic on I-495 northbound at the I-95/I-495 split. Two right lanes remain closed on I-495 northbound.

Clean-up involved hazardous materials.

Today’s big rig crash follows last week’s crash between a tractor-trailer and pickup truck pulling a trailer with a hazardous substance on Interstate 95.

In that instance, interstate travel through the state was delayed for hours. Hazmat crews decided to burn off, rather than transport the material away from the crash site.

The closing, while not as serious as last week’s crash – which, for a time closed down both sides of I-95 before the 495 and 295 splits – will put pressure on adjacent routes, including Interstate 95.  A long-term rehabilitation project through Wilmington has reduced the number of travel lanes on I-95.
