Gasoline prices in Delaware remained steady during the Memorial Day weekend, Wilmington-based AAA Mid-Atlantic reported. Upward pressure on prices is possible, given continuing price gains in crude oil.

Drivers had few problems finding gasoline but were paying around $1 more a gallon than they did during the holiday last year.

Below are Tuesday  gas prices from AAA.

Today’s Average One Week Ago One Month Ago One Year Ago
National $3.04 $3.03 $2.89 $1.97
Delaware $2.98 $2.97 $2.78 $1.90
Dover $2.98 $2.97 $2.78 $1.89
Milford/Seaford $2.99 $2.98 $2.78 $1.89
Wilmington/Newark $2.97 $2.96 $2.77 $1.90
Maryland $3.03 $3.02 $2.83 $2.02

Costco near Newark had the state’s lowest price at  $2.80 a gallon.

Prior to the weekend, Biden Administrtion acknowledged the pain at the pump but pointed out in a statement that gas prices remain reasonable on a historical basis when the rise in the cost of living is considered.  Biden remains opposed to an increase in the gas tax.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration, gas demand increased last week, which will likely contribute to fluctuations in pump prices through the holiday weekend since holiday travelers will get to and from their destinations via vehicle.

At the close of NYMEX trading Tuesday West crude oil settled at 68.43, $2 a barrel above Friday’s close.

“More than 450,000 Philadelphia five-county area residents will be traveling for the Memorial Day holiday, a jump of about 60 percent over last year,” Jana L. Tidwell, manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic, stetted on Friday.  “Gas prices locally and nationally are expected to fluctuate through the weekend as 94% of those traveling this holiday weekend will be doing so by car, which could drive up gas demand.”
