Sallie Mae eliminates 105 jobs in Delaware

Student lender Sallie Mae has eliminated slightly more than 100 jobs at its northern Delaware operations.

The company is based in the Christiana-Stanton south of Newark and. has an employment center in the New Castle area.

The company recently announced a new organizational structure that according to spokesperson Ashley Boucher  “will create better focus and alignment, and efficiencies to best serve our customers.  The vast majority of our workforce has been retained to deliver on our mission.”

According to Boucher, 105 employees were affected by the restructuring or about six percent of the total workforce.

Those impacted were given 60 days of advance notice with a temporary enhancement of severance benefits, Boucher stated.
 
In addition to severance pay, departing employees will receive any annual bonuses health benefits were extended through the end of the year. Coverage can be extended for an additional 18 months, with  Sallie Mae continuing to pay the company portion of their health benefits for a period of time, based on severance benefits.
 
Outplacement services are also offered.
 
Boucher noted that the company is hiring in Delaware in other functions with nearly 70 job openings available.
