Delaware remains in the middle of the pack when it comes to the decline  in claims for unemployment compensation.

The WalletHub financial information website ranked the state 24th. Neighboring Pennsylvania came in13th, with Maryland at 40th. New Jersey ranked first. Ranking 51st was New Mexico.

Delaware’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in October 2020 dropped sharply to 5.6 percent, from 8.3 percent in September.

The figure was well below the national jobless rate of 6.9 percent and figures for neighboring states. It also came despite the state seeing a higher percentage of job losses than the nation.

Jobless figures are subject to adjustments and November and December jobless figures will offer clues on whether the lower figure is a sign of things to come.

Prior to the pandemic, Delaware’s jobless rate was in the four percent range.

Currently,  11.1 million Americans are unemployed due to the Covid-19 pandemic in total. Last week, there were 778,000 new unemployment claims nationwide, far fewer than the 6.9 million reported during the peak of the pandemic.
