Delaware ended up near the middle of the pack when it came to moves via U-Haul trucks and trailers.

After ranking No. 11 last year, the state ended up in the 21st spot with a nearly equal number of inbound and outbound moves.

Neighboring Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland ended up near the bottom of this list. Delaware is seeing an influx of older residents to Sussex and Kent counties, thanks to a coastal location, favorable tax treatment on retirement income and low property taxes.

Delaware was 18th for growth in 2017, 15th in 2016 and 23rd in 2015.

Growth States are calculated by the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks entering a state versus leaving that state during a calendar year. Migration trends data is compiled from more than two million one-way U-Haul truck-sharing transactions that occur annually.

Delaware arrivals of one-way U-Haul trucks increased 12 percent while departures increased 13 percent compared to the state’s 2018 numbers. Despite a larger jump in departures, arrivals still accounted for 50.4 percent of all one-way U-Haul traffic.
