Utilities in Delaware are putting peak power technology and pricing to work as the area sees a brutal blend of heat and humidity.

Delmarva Power customers declared a peak savings day on  Friday between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Delaware Electric Cooperative, which serves Kent and Sussex counties,  has been declaring Beat the Peak days.  The program involves a phone app that details ways to save power. The cooperative estimates the program has trimmed $30 million from member  bills.

While the region’s power supply is expected to be sufficient to meet high demand, customers will receive incentives for reducing energy use, Delmarva Power stated.

The situation is more serious in New York City with the mayor ordering thermostats in high rise buildings to be set to 78 degrees. A portion of the city saw a blackout last weekend.

Delmarva customers can receive a bill credit of $1.25 for every kilowatt-hour of reduced energy use below their average energy figure.

Customers can sign up to receive an alert after a Peak Savings Day with details on how much they saved and how their savings compared to others. Savings information is also available the next day in My Account and on their next bill.

For customers participating in Energy Wise Rewards, Delmarva Power will cycle air conditioners during a Peak Savings Day.

Under the program, Delmarva Power will send a signal to the participant’s thermostat or outdoor switch to cycle the air conditioner compressors off and on based on the customer-selected cycling level. Because the air conditioner fan will continue to run, customers may not notice a temperature change in their home.
