Artesian Water has taken the unusual step of asking its customers to attend a Saturday rally protesting plans for the expansion of a construction waste landfill in the New Castle area.

In a letter to customers, longtime Artesian CEO Dian Taylor cited the presence of the Potomac Aquifer as a reason to oppose the expansion of the site in Minquadale and urged customers to attend a Saturday morning rally that would protest the expansion.

Taylor also claimed that much of the waste would come from out of state.

The decision to expand the landfill is now up to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

DNREC has to operate within state regulations in making a decision.

Artesian has wells in the area, which has also seen contamination believed to be related to the use of firefighting chemicals at the New Castle County Airport home of an Air National Guard base.

Waste Management wants to add another 60 feet to the landfill, which is also opposed by New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer and other elected officials.

Legislation that would have barred the expansion failed to pass in the past session of the General Assembly.

The rally against the landfill will be held at 3601 N. DuPont Highway from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
